lntroduction to Buddhism and Meditation,
continued
Tuesdays through Feb. 6, 2000
7:00pm-8:30pm
Building on the previous two sections, this course will introduce the meditations of the 'Lam Rim' which are very practical tools for transforming our minds on the path to fullfilling our highest potential. These analytic meditations help us work with negative, limiting emotions and help us develop the life-enriching qualities of compassion and wisdom.
The class will be led by the director of DFF, Jesse Fenton, and a portion of the class will include selected video of Venerable Chodron's teachings. There will be lots of opportunity for questions, answers and discussion.
If you missed the first two sections, you're welcome to jump in mid-course. If you'd like to catch up in that case, we recommend reading "Open Heart Clear Mind" by Thubten Chodron, available through our website or through your local bookstore.
Section C: Basic Meditations on the Buddhist View
In the context of the Lamrim, we'll talk about and meditate on the mind as the source of our joy and pain, on the three characteristics of cyclic existence and on the value of our precious human rebirth. The lam rim is the progressive series of meditations and their resultant insights that condense the entire body of Buddhist teachings into a clear and 'user friendly' system. We'll discuss how to set up an altar and establish a daily meditation practice and continue to develop our practice of clam abiding. We'll also talk about the transformative purpose, the'psychological mechanism,' of the prayers which we recite.
Please arrive at least 15 minutes early on your first night in order to register.
