Teachings with Geshe Damdul Namgyal

Geshe Damdul of Drepung Monastery is teaching this week at the DFF Center.
Geshe Damdul was born in 1959 in a refugee camp in India, shortly after his parents followed the Dalai Lama into exile after the Chinese communist invasion of Tibet. He is a fully ordained monk who completed all the traditional studies and obtained the degree of Geshe Lharampa (Doctor of Philosophy, with honors) in 1992. He also holds B.A. and M.A. degrees in English literature, and has pursued higher studies in Western philosophy and psychology.

Geshe-la is currently the principal of the monastery school at Drepung Loseling Monastery in Mungod, India. He is spending this summer in Knoxville, TN, at a Dharma center he established a few years ago called Losel Shedrup Ling. He speaks excellent English, he has established many warm connections with Western Dharma students, and Dharma Friendship Foundation feels extremely fortunate to be able to host Geshe-la for these extended teachings. For his full bio, see Geshe Damdul Namgyal.

From the "Guide to a Bodhisattva's Way of Life"

May I be a protector for those without one,
A guide for all travelers on the way;
May I be a bridge, a boat,and a ship
For all who wish to cross the water.

May I be an island for those who seek one
And a lamp for those desiring light;
May I be a bed for all who wish to rest
And a slave for all who want a slave.

May I be a wishing jewel, a magic vase,
Powerful mantras, and great medicine;
May I be a wish fulfilling tree
and a cow of plenty for the world.

Just like the space
And all the great elements such as earth,
may I always support the life
Of all the boundless creatures.

And until they pass away from pain
May I also be the source of life
For all realms of varied beings
That reach into the ends of space.
